Before you start
- Know which skills you want to narrow. The tab lists only the skills the project actually uses, not every skill in the space.
- Know each skill's type. It decides which of the routes below is available, and what a number in the count field actually means. See Choosing a skill type.
Procedure
Open the project's Properties, then the Resource availability tab. Each skill the project uses gets a row, with its type beside it.
There are three ways to narrow a skill. They are independent, and not all of them are available on every skill.
Cap how many work at once (Normal skills)
- On the skill's row, select the value beside # of resources available.
- Choose Maximum number of resources to assign simultaneously and enter a number of units.
- Select OK.
Important
This caps how many resources work on the skill at the same time. It does not shrink the pool: every resource holding the skill stays eligible. To shrink the pool, name the resources instead.
Set the pool size (Virtual skills)
A Virtual skill normally has nobody behind it to name. LYNX-X will not propose a resource for one, even though you can assign one by hand. Its availability is a count and a calendar, and the project can override both.
- On the skill's row, select the value beside # of resources available or Calendar.
- Enter the number available to this project, and pick a calendar.
- Select OK.
Name the resources
- On the skill's row, select Let scheduler decide or click to select.
- Tick the resources this project should use.
- Select OK.
Note
The list is sorted, not filtered. match: holds the resources that implement the skill and other: holds everyone else, and both can be ticked. Ticking someone under other: selects a resource who does not hold the skill.
To undo a selection and hand the choice back, select Let Lynx decide.
Narrow by property value
Where a skill carries properties, the project can require a particular value instead of naming individuals.
- On the skill's row, select Property values. It reads Not set, click to configure until something is set.
- Give the property a value.
- Select OK.
Expected outcome
The skill's row records what you set: a name in Selected resources, a value in Property values, or a number in place of the default count. Anything left alone keeps its (default) marker, or still reads Let scheduler decide or click to select.
On T01, System Tester shows what a configured skill looks like: three resources implement it, and only Tom Smith is selected.
