Before you start
- You need a template in the space. To make one, see Creating a project template.
- Decide on an ID for the new project. It must be 3 to 10 characters and unique within the space.
Procedure
- In the top bar, select Portfolio. The Project list opens.
- Select New project. The Project properties dialog opens.
- Select the Template tab.
- Select Create a new project from an existing project.
- In Select a project, choose the template. Templates are listed first, as Template: followed by the template's name.
- In Project ID, type the new project's ID. The hint next to it turns green when the ID is valid.
- In Project description, replace the suggested Clone of … name with the new project's name.
- Select Copy project.
Copy project creates the project. The dialog then shows the new project's properties, and the Template tab is gone.
Important
Selecting a template on the Project list does not choose it here. The Template tab always starts on Create an empty project.
Expected outcome
The new project is on the Project list under Not started, with the ID and name you entered. It holds the template's tasks, renumbered with its own ID, with all their information: durations, due dates, dependencies and assignments.
The template is unchanged and still listed under the Templates filter, ready for the next project.
Additional information
- Before releasing the new project, adjust its ID, name, dates, assignments and scope to fit this project. Check Project dates in particular: the new project has the template's end date.
- Below the templates, Select a project also lists ordinary projects, as Clone prj: followed by the project's name. Make sure you choose a Template: entry.
- To reuse part of a template, open the template and copy the tasks or workpackages you need into another project.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Resolution |
|---|---|
| Copy project is greyed out. | Type a Project ID. The hint next to it turns green when the ID has 3 to 10 characters and is not already used in the space. |
| OK is greyed out on the Template tab. | Select Copy project instead. OK becomes available once the project has been created. |
| The new project has no tasks. | It was created as an empty project. On the Template tab, select Create a new project from an existing project before choosing the template. |
| The project exists although you selected Cancel. | The project is created as soon as you select Copy project. Cancel after that only closes the dialog. |
| The new project is not on the Project list. | The list opens on Released. Select the Not started filter. |
